Shaft Grounding Ring for NEMA and
IEC Motors Includes Mounting Adaptor for Simplified Installation
MECHANIC FALLS, ME (July
2006) — Electro Static Technology’s AEGIS SGR Conductive MicroFiber Shaft Grounding Ring now includes a mounting adaptor to facilitate installation
of the device on AC motors with shaft shoulders, slingers, bearing caps, or
end-bell protrusions. Designed for use
on any NEMA or IEC motor frame, the adaptor consists of a mounting plate to
support the SGR and standoffs to provide clearance for bearing housings or
slingers. Simple installation
instructions are available online at www.est-aegis.com.
The new all-in-one
package is ordered by motor frame size and dramatically simplifies installation
of the AEGIS SGR Shaft Grounding Ring for electrical, mechanical, and
maintenance contractors. It will also
streamline installation of the SGR on new motors by OEMs. Secured with three mounting screws, the
sturdy aluminum mounting adapter holds the SGR in place beyond the protrusion,
and the entire assembly covers less than ½” of the motor shaft. Slots in the plate accommodate different
motor designs and configurations, and the kit can be ordered with standoff
posts from 0.125” to 1.5” in length (0.25”, 0.5” and 1.0” ships with NEMA/IEC
SGR kit).

When
a variable frequency drive (VFD) is used to control the speed of an AC motor,
current induced on the motor shaft by the drive discharges through bearings,
causing fusion craters on bearing race walls. Over time, this can lead to noise, vibration, bearing failure, and
catastrophic motor failure. The AEGIS SGR prevents bearing damage by dissipating shaft currents to ground. Conductive microfibers inside the SGR provide
the path of least resistance, allowing these shaft currents to discharge safely
to the motor frame. Maintenance-free,
the SGR extends motor life. Unlike
conventional shaft grounding brushes, the SGR’s conductive microfibers work
with virtually no friction or wear; are unaffected by dirt, grease, or other
contaminants; and last for the life of the motor, regardless of RPM.
The patent-pending AEGIS SGR is available in standard sizes to fit NEMA motors with frames from 140T to
440T and IEC motors with frames from IEC80 to IEC315.
